Pixi Beauty MatteLast Liquid Lip: Drugstore Nude Lipsticks

These lipsticks were gifted to me by Pixi Beauty.

I’m a huge fan of matte liquid lipsticks. I’m an even bigger fan of nude lipsticks. Pixi Beauty’s MatteLast Liquid Lip collection is like a dream come true for lipstick lovers looking for comfortable everyday drugstore nude matte lipsticks.

Phew. Comfortable everyday drugstore nude matte lipsticks. Try saying that five times fast.

If you look through my overflowing lipstick collection in my ever-growing makeup drawer, you’ll find a variety of mostly nude lipsticks from various brands, as I love trying out different formulas on the market. For over a year, Tarte’s Tarteist Creamy Matte Lip Paint in Namaste has been my ride-or-die nude lipstick, as I fell in love with its soft matte finish, velvety texture, and slanted doe foot applicator. After trying out the Pixi Beauty MatteLast Liquid Lips for the past week, I officially have a new favorite nude. Well, five actually.

Pixi Beauty MatteLast Liquid Lip Shades

Pixi Beauty’s MatteLast Liquid Lip ($14) collection comes in six different shades, five of which were sent to me by Pixi Beauty to try. Their nude shades are:

  • Au Naturelle: terracotta with peachy undertones
  • Matte Beige: neutral beige
  • Pastel Petal: pink beige
  • Really Rose: dusty rose
  • Evening Rose: plum rose

The other shade is Prettiest Pink, a vibrant pink.

My absolute favorite shade is Matte Beige. If you watch my swatch video below, you’ll see why. *Spoiler*: It’s gorgeous and makes me feel like the ultimate sophisticated boss lady.

Formula

These lipsticks are comparable to Tarte’s Tarteist Creamy Matte Lip Paints ($20), but whereas those have a mousse-like texture, slightly tingly sensation and minty scent upon application, the Pixi Beauty MatteLast Liquid Lip glides on a lot more smoothly and has a pleasant rose scent, which fades away as the formula dries down. Additionally, these Pixi lipsticks are:

  • Comfortable
  • Infused with rosehip oil
  • Universally flattering
  • Quickly set to a matte veil while leaving lips hydrated
  • Not tested on animals
  • Paraben free

While Pixi claims that these lipsticks are extremely long-wearing, I only found this to be true in certain scenarios. The MatteLast Liquid Lips are kiss proof and have minimal transfer while eating and drinking cold or room temperature non-oily foods and beverages. The second you put a spoonful of hot soup in your mouth, the lipstick suddenly develops an appetite, too, and goes off to lunch. I ended up with patchy coverage on my lips after finishing my mushroom soup last week, but it was an easy fix with another coat of lipstick. If you’re planning on eating hot or messy foods, carry this lipstick with you in your purse for a quick touch-up throughout the day.

My favorite thing about these liquid lips is how hydrating, lightweight, and comfortable they are on the lips! The PixiPetal applicator is also a definite plus!

Application

To prep your lips for matte lipstick, gently exfoliate your lips to remove any dead skin cells and smooth your lips. I love using sugar scrubs or lip exfoliants for this step. My current favorite is the Pixi Beauty Nourishing Lip Polish ($12), which has a unique massage applicator with bristles to stimulate circulation and give your lips a healthy, plumped effect. Leave on the lip polish for a couple minutes to let it smoothen your lips, then dab it off with a napkin.

Beauty tip: You can actually leave on the polish as a lip balm if you don’t plan on wearing lipstick!

Next, glide the PixiPetal applicator along your lips and give it about a minute to dry down to a soft, velvet matte finish. I like starting from the center of my bottom lip and gliding the applicator out to the sides, then repeating this on my upper lip without smacking my lips together. I find that one layer is all I need to achieve a uniform and pigmented look. The PixiPetal makes application so easy and precise, especially when it comes to defining my Cupid’s bow and lining my lips. I don’t even use lip liner with these lipsticks.

FYI: Unless you have lip fillers, matte lipsticks are more likely to sink into your lip lines and give you that not-so-cute cracked lip look. As someone who does not have lip fillers, I can confirm that these lipsticks slightly settle into my lip lines, but it looks natural and fine as long as my lips are exfoliated beforehand. Please keep this in mind before purchasing any matte lipstick and expecting it to look flawless on you like it does on people with lip fillers on your Instagram feed or in YouTube videos.
