Do blue light computer glasses actually work for migraine relief? If you get headaches or eye strain from staring at digital screens, here’s what you need to know to protect your eyes and prevent irritation regardless if you wear prescription or non-RX glasses.
Around this time last year, I was looking at the best gaming glasses because I knew they blocked blue light and could potentially help me prevent migraines, but there was an extremely small selection of these glasses for women. The only ones I could find for women had obnoxious pink tints on the lenses and everything else had yellow tinted lenses. The frames also weren’t particularly cute or my style, plus they retailed for around $70 dollars, which was too expensive for my budget, so I decided to give up on my search.
Shortly thereafter, Firmoo, a global online optical store, reached out to me to review a pair of their glasses on my YouTube channel. At first glance, I was like, “Um, no“, because I don’t wear prescription glasses and didn’t think their products would be relevant to me. After taking a look at their website, I discovered they offer an option to add on clear blue light blocking lenses to their frames and I was like, “Um, YES!”
If you keep up with me on Instagram Stories, then you know I suffer from migraines at least twice a month. I first started getting them three years ago during the spring semester of my junior year in college. I’m not sure if there’s any correlation between my migraines and their onset, but one thing I’m sure about is the correlation between my migraines and the amount of time I spend staring at my computer and phone screens.
As a content creator, YouTuber, and blogger, I spend at least 8-10 hours a day starting at a screen because of editing, emails, writing blog posts, drafting the perfect Instagram caption, filling out my YouTube description boxes, and everything in between. Even if you’re not a content creator, chances are you spend your work or school day staring at a computer screen or spend too much time on your phone, too. Without blue light computer glasses, I can only edit for about four hours before I start getting a pounding migraine and have to call it a day.
Why is blue light bad for you?
Overexposure to blue light can damage the human eye by causing inflammation to the cornea and damaging the crystalline lens or retina. Staring at digital screens which emit blue light can strain and exhaust your eyes. Some people may also experience restlessness at night from exposure to blue light.
What does the blue light filter do for you?
Blue light filters can provide you sharper vision by refracting visible light wavelengths so that they strike different focal points on the retina, thus putting less strain on your eyes. When I started wearing the Firmoo glasses, I noticed I was able to sit through a complete work day on the computer without any sort of tension headache or migraine. I’m now able to finish an editing session in one sitting, which still amazes me every time because there’s such a world of difference between my workflow and pain with and without blue light blocking glasses. Wearing blue light computer glasses has been one of the best lifestyle changes for me.
Why should I buy from Firmoo?
What I love about Firmoo is that they have excellent customer service, offer a wide variety of chic styles that are updated frequently, and are affordable. One pair of frames will cost you no more than $39. For an additional cost, you can select add-ons like thinner lenses. Plus, they have a buy one get one free deal!
You can also virtually try on the glasses by uploading a picture of yourself, which I think is really cool and helpful because it gave me an idea of how the frames would look on my face and figure out which style would suit me best. Firmoo offers prescription and non-prescription glasses, as well as sunglasses, for adults and children, so there are glasses for everyone.
After going back and forth between a few different styles, I chose a pair of round and oversized clear glasses because I wanted frames that would go with any outfit and look cute. Here are the exact details of my Firmoo glasses:
- Frame: #S939(C3/13)
- Kind of Glasses: NON-RX
- Lens: Blue-light(1.57)
My glasses came with this map print hard case and gray microfiber cleaning cloth. Keeping my glasses safe and clean is super important to me, so I’m extremely thankful Firmoo sends hard cases as opposed to those flimsy drawstring glasses bags. I feel comfortable throwing this case into my purse or travel bags knowing that my glasses won’t break.
If you suffer from migraines, definitely consider trying Firmoo’s glasses with blue light lenses. Here are some additional helpful tips to reduce eye strain and prevent migraines:
- 20-20-20 rule: Every 20 minutes, take a 20 second break from the screen and focus on something at least 20 feet away.
- Enable your phone’s blue light filter: If you have an iPhone, go to Settings > Display & Brightness > Night Shift.
- Use eye drops: If your eyes become dry during computer or phone usage, use artificial tears to refresh your eyes.
